Research Exercises

There is a wealth of resources for research into linguistics and language studies on the WEB. Some of these are what can be termed 'links' or general reference sites ___pages which don't in themselves necessarily contain much information but which provide useful collections of links to information-rich sites. These links are typically organised into sub-categories. Then, of course, there are the sites which do provide the actual information - research findings, subject overviews, journal articles, courses, bibliographies etc on particular subject areas. There are pages on virtually every sub-topic within linguistics available on the WEB.

Your task for this unit is to locate WEB addresses (the URL) for the following:

  1. a linguistics/language studies links site (a site which provides collections of links to linguistics-related WEB sites)
  2. a site devoted to a particular sub-topic within linguistics/language studies
  3. a page providing information on the International Phonetic Alphabet
  4. an online linguistics journal

When you have located these sites/pages, send me a brief e-mail (to my address at p.r.white@bham.ac.uk) in which you list the WEB addresses of the sites. For each site you should also add a sentence or two briefly describing the site and its content, and saying how you found it. Make sure that you include your full name in the e-mail.

We'll pool our findings at the end of the unit to create our own links pages which we will develop as the course unfolds.

To contact me with any problems, questions or comments, please e-mail me at p.r.white@bham.ac.uk
